Re: Boat type query

Hi Brian,

apologies for the late reply, but have been away in the US and Canada on holiday.

Many thanks for the reply on the boat query - very much appreciated. I am now in contact with the son of Otto Aksdal. I will pass on details to him.

Cheers and best wishes,

Bob

Re: Boat type query

Many thanks to MTB 208 and Admin for their respective replies. A bit more digging has revealed that MTB F stands for MTB Flotilla. The Norwegian sailor who is the focus of my research was Otto Aksdal. He served aboard MTB 722, which was under the command of Lt Knut Bøgeberg. MDSE stands for Marinens...

Boat type query

By chance, does anyone know what the following abbreviations mean? MTBF MDL Pool MSPE - this is possibly Norwegian MAS - possibly a type of Italian type torpedo boat used by SOE? If it is of any help, the sailor concerned worked for Norwegian SOE and spent much time in the Shetlands Any clues to the...

Calculating the speed of an MTB

I am trying to work out the time it would take for MTB 675 to travel 400 nautical miles on one or possibly two engines from the Norwegian coast - 30 miles west of Askvoll - to Dunbar, just south of Edinburgh. Obviously the weather conditions would have been a factor, but a general calculation would ...

Re: Paul J Kemp

Hello there, Many thanks for the link - that proved most useful. I contacted Orion Books who stated that they could not give out his personal details, understandably, but would pass on my e-mail to him. I have now written to him via Orion. Hopefully, Paul will reply in good time. Thanks again for th...

I am trying to make contact with Paul J Kemp, a prolific author of naval warfare. By chance, does anyone know details of his whereabouts?

Many thanks,

Re: MTB 675 - Oct 1943

Hello there, And very many thanks for your posting. These are amazing images - thank you for sharing them. The last one - credited to the IWM - I have seen recently on their website, but the other two are completely new. I see the date given is Sept - one month before she went in to action off Askvo...

MTB 675 - Oct 1943

In Oct 1943, MTB 675 dropped off an agent on to an island west of Askvoll, Norway. The boat was commanded by Lt Bramwell RNVR - an Irishman from Bangor. Due to bad weather the boat had to lay up under camouflage until the weather improved. On Oct 16, whilst making a dash for home, she was attacked b...

Re: MTB 715

Further to my last post. Patrick Dalzel-Job was dropped off on the island of Atleø on Oct 14th 1943. No time can be ascertained at present, but highly likely during the hours during the hours of darkness.

Kind regards

Re: MTB 715

Dear Brian, thanks once again for your help. I see the Tarbrush ops are listed in the TNA. I will copy these when next there. If you would like a copy then just ask away and I'll gladly post them to you. I have just returned from researching in Norway. I climbed the mountain that Dalzel-Job chose as...

MTB 715

By chance, does anyone know the nick-name given to MTB 715? This boat served out of Lerwick on ops in to Norway.

Many thanks in advance,

Re: Sub Lt Patrick Dalzel-Job RNVR

Hi Julie, Many thanks for the reply - very much appreciated. I had seen the site before, but thanks for reminding me as it was a while since I last took a look at it. As you can see he was quite an active character. At the moment I am trying to find out how he was recruited to the RNVR. I get the im...

Sub Lt Patrick Dalzel-Job RNVR

Hello there, Currently, I am researching a Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve officer, Sub/Lt Patrick Dalzel-Job. This officer was involved with Norway prior to and during the German invasion of Norway. Against Admiralty orders he helped with the evacuation of Narvik just before the town was razed to the ...
