Re: P/O John 'Happy' Day - PMX634761 Radar Mechanician Osten

It is my sad duty to post that Petty Officer John Day passed away at home in Caerphilly on March 28th 2012 after a long illness at the age of 88. After surviving the near sinking of escort destroyer HMS Winchelsea in the Bay of Biscay on September 11th 1943 on his way to join Coastal Forces in Malta...

Re: Boat in Cardiff

I can't help you I'm afraid but I'm sure others on here can and I'll show it to my grand dad but where is it in Cardiff? Is that the River Ely or Rhymney and what is the road behind? Penarth Rd? Ely Link?

Looks a very smart model - wish they did a 1:72 motor launch as well

Re: Commercially available kits

Yes thanks - perhaps I should have been more specific with my post or added it to that thread - I've added a link to photos of the kit in question there anyway. I'm really asking about a motor launch rather than the sexier MTBs & MGBs which that thread focusses on. By 'commercial' I suppose I me...

Commercially available kits

Apart from the old Airfix Vosper MTB - which I think is now discontinued - and the Revell US PT boats and German S-Boot, does anyone know of any commercially available kits of Royal Navy coastal forces boats? It would be great if I could get hold of a 1:72nd scale kit of a motor launch

Re: ML 118, 150, 153 & 490

Incidentally, when I searched for the boats above on the CFV database, it came up with two entries for ML118 as follows: ML 118 A B Motor Launch, constructed by Midland Boat Works of Ontario on 06.11.1943. ML 118 A B Motor Launch, constructed by Sussex Shipbuilders of Shoreham on 07.10.1940. Sold = ...

Re: ML 118, 150, 153 & 490

Thanks again Jonco - where did you see that? Can you post a link please? I was looking here: http://www.unithistories.com/units_british/RN_CoastalForces.html The dates you indicate tie up with my grandfather's movements after VE day. My understanding is that once in Copenhagen his flotilla were base...

Re: ML 118, 150, 153 & 490

Thanks for the reply Jonco, Yes, I had done the Google search and came up with the information you posted above but I am looking for a little more information - specifically, where those boats were based on (or near to) the dates specified - but haven't been able to find out using Google or other se...

ML 118, 150, 153 & 490

Navy Command has provided my grandfather with some dates relating to his service as a radar mechanician with Coastal Forces and apart from his Service in Europe with both CFMU1 & then CFMU2, it also provides some dates for his service with actual vessels. Apart from one stint on destroyer HMS Wi...

CFMU1 Ostend & Walcheren Island

My grandfather, served in CFMU1 in Ostend. The base was located in a hotel in Louisastraat - the photographs in my post here: https://cfv.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=278 were taken outside the hotel. Does anyone know what the name of the hotel was? An Ostend newspaper archivist has helpfull...

P/O John 'Happy' Day - PMX634761 Radar Mechanician Ostend

My Grandfather, John Henry Thomas Day, who is still alive, was a member of Coastal Forces in the run up to VE Day. I am looking for any evidence I can find that places him in North West Europe from 7th September 1944 to 19th May 1945 because the MOD Medals Office refused him his France & Germany...
