Re: Burma: uniform in general use by coastal forces Far East Asia
This matter was referred to me by Burma Star, London, but I couldn't give much help. I do remember that on MLGB 269 there was little mention of the Rig of the Day. In fact for Mountbatten's review on the Rangoon River to mark the recapture of that City, we had to scrounge white shorts from one of th...

Re: ML 269
Hello Mark, the Admin post has just got in before I could send a reply to you. I am sorry to tell you that Lt Lazenby was not on ML 269 between us leaving Milford Haven in October 1944, heading to Burma where our boat was turned over to the Burma Navy in October 1945. You will still have more resear...

Re: Four Torpedo D Boats
Thank you Christian for your remarks regarding D-Boats with four torpedos, I will pass this on to the enquirer. I was on MTBs 738 and 749 and we had only the two torpedos which in fact were not used in my time, although I left the Flotilla after the accident to 749 and was on the way o Burma by earl...

Four Torpedo D Boats
Just returned to Australia after a short trip to the UK. Mainly a Clan gathering of my family in Scotland but I managed a full day in Portsmouth. My purpose was to lay a Poppy at the name of AB Bill McNemany who was killed in the Irrawaddy River at the action against Japanese craft, 16/17 May 1945. ...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
Could have been in July, August or September, sorry I can't give a closer estimate. Lt Cdr Wilkie was definitely in command. I have looked at maps over the years and feel that the river must have been the Loire. I think the mine damaged boat must have been from the same flotilla, the 64th. You could...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
Our two day trip into the Bay of Biscay had no involvement about mine-laying, I think the last minelaying trip for 749 was at the end of June,1944. This was fairly close to Cherbourg and we were under attack by RN destroyers on the way home. I understand that after E-Boats heading along the coast to...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
Great work, this is certainly the suit I wore, the coxswain helped to fit it on me, gave me a thump on my back and said something about, ---if you are in the oggin, pull that toggle.--- I remember trying that out, leaving me the task of putting it all together again. Good if after all this time, you...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
Hello and thank you. As you say the armoured suite was tied to the Boat, probably to the Gun. Not sure of the date but definitely between July to September, 1944. The only time I have seen any mention of these suites was in photos or newsreals of the interior of US Airforce Flying Fortress where the...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
Sorry not making myself clear. Firstly the only time I ever wore the suit was on MTB 738 of the 64th Flotiilla, CO Lt Cdr Wilkie. the suit were worn over normal D-Boat clothing that was a kapok suit covering from neck to ankle. Over this was a waterproof suit with large pockets, in one was a compact...

Re: Uniform in general use by MTB crews
I recall now that our armoured suits were as used by the U S Airforce for their gunners on Flying Fortresses. They came in three pieces, front, back and family jewels. Clip together with one release toggle. The dates when I was on D-Boats were May/June to September, 1944.

Australia remembers Coxswain Rogers
Jonathan Rogers, who earned his DSM as Coxswain of MTB 698 in 1944, later transferred to the RAN. He was serving on HMAS Voyager, a Daring Class destroyer, when on 10 February 1964 the Voyager was cut in two parts by the aircraft carrier, HMAS Melbourne. This resulted in the death of 81 Officers and...

Re: ML 891
Thank you David and Christian. John Weston lived in Appledore, North Devon with his wife in a house with the walls covered with his paintings. His local pub was I think the Royal George. I have lost touch with my Burma Star friends in North Devon and don't know anything about his dear wife. If the W...

Re: ML 891
Are you sure there were 3 dead from this event? I have met Lt Weston a few times in Appledore and he described the event as he edged in to rescue the men from the Landing Craft that had been the first to be mined and on withdrawing through the mined area he ordered all hands on deck except the MM wh...

When I was editing a Newsletter for Burma Star Association in Australia I wanted to include an article about an action when four MLs sank three Japanese boats on the Irrawaddy River just north of Yandoon on 20th May 1945. I had a good memory of the action but had never seen any official reports or m...

Re: ML 269
ML 269 survivors have gone from three, Alan Penny, Eddie Perry and me, to five with the good news that Ginger Haddon and JIm Christie are still wih us. Eddie Perry had traced seven of us and we had all met either in Preston, Plymouth and South Wales. Harley, Spiers, John and Earnshaw had died. To co...
