Sinking of HM ML 916 November 8th 1944

To all involved with the Coastal Forces Veterans Association - On the anniversary of the sinking of HM ML 916 we are thinking of the nineteen oh so young men who died at that instant in the cold, muddy water of the River Scheldt and whose names are listed on the Remembrance page. Our families would ...

Would love to come to your talk but Western Isles a bit too far away. Can you tell me who painted the stunning pictures on the slide show please?

Re: Sidney Davis

Hi Madrob - There is a Davis in a photo of my dad's HDML crew possibly in Ceylon. Don't know what No this boat is. Thread under Motor Launches........ 'ML 916 .... a long shot!' think its 4th page. Could be any Davis though there's no Christian name! Cheers Stu.

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Hi Sarah - Read your post with interest. Pam and I and our families can understand your amazement and emotion at reading these accounts. I feel there is a good story here that should be told. There seem to have been six bodies recovered and identified from ML 916 your uncle being one. I suppose they...

Re: Web Site main pictures

Hi again - Far from being 'unknown' I now see Brian Mullen was the official Commando War Artist! Very strong drawing and a tragic loss.

Re: Web Site main pictures

Lovely picture Peter - I especially like the way Harold Garland handles the sky! In the family we have two paintings by Brian Mullen (possibly Commando) who unfortunately never survived the Normandy landings - I wonder if anyone has heard of this artist but I suspect he is another 'unknown'. Will tr...

Web Site main pictures

Good Morning Admin - I would just like to say how much I enjoy the pictures you put up on the heading of the website. A lovely painting celebrating the Dutch contribution. I know there were many official War Artists but there were also lots of artists, professional and amateur who tried to put their...

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Kevin - Can I recommend to you, Patrick Dalziel Job's book "From Artic Snows to Dust of Normandy" for another amazing account of someone's war. A great read and, you realise at the end, a moving, real life love story. You can find it, used, on Amazon very reasonably. Stuart

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Kevin - Very many thanks for your Dad's memoirs, read through it this afternoon. Fascinating. I remember my father sitting in front of the TV watching the Test Match (when we were all in black and white!) and idly picking at something on his neck then producing a little chunk of shrapnel which he dr...

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Kevin - We would love a copy of your dad's war records. I'll swap you the drawing of ML250 for it, if you can give me your address. Our Email is;- pam_and_stumacp@yahoo.com The memsahib, reading your posts over my shoulder, asks - Have you digitised your Dad's accounts (in case of fire etc), have yo...

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Yet more thanks Kevin. I never knew this event was so well documented. I joined this thread just thinking it would be interesting for folks to know that it was my father, skipper of 916, they were talking about and how he survived after the War, never thinking for a moment that there were two eye wi...

Re: A Long shot - ML 916 and ...?

Morning Gentlemen - Your wealth of knowledge never fails to amaze eg.- how did you know Dalziel-Job was in Orkney in 1942? I have to ask you how you became so interested in all this, as it is becoming clear to me that there were thousands more individuals in Coastal Forces than I realised and that t...
