Re: Use of Aldis lamp

Thank you for your response, Sludder; I'm thinking of the autumn of 1941.

Re: Goon / Ursula suits

Thank you. I noticed a similar outfit being worn by Hitch in "Gunboat Command". Goon Suit certainly sounds like slang to me!

Goon / Ursula suits

I am finding references to these and both sound similar in description. Can anyone confirm that they were the same piece of kit, with two different names, or were there subtle differences?

Re: Use of Aldis lamp

Thanks for this. From what I can gather the Aldis was more popular at the start of hostilities when R/T was not as reliable, or for less "public" messaging. I've noted several references to shaded Aldis lamps being used to send messages to vessels astern.

Use of Aldis lamp

My apologies if this is a foolish question but, in the early days of the short boats, (63 and 70’) who would have used the Aldis lamp? I assume the telegraphist would usually be stationed below so did one of the officers assume the duty, a seaman gunner, or did individual boats make their own arrang...

Re: 70' British Powerboat Company Co (former MASB)

27 is a 60' (as was 37); I suppose it possible the 70' version had slightly more room for a bridge (although even in much later short craft this is described as being only 2'.6” x 5')

Re: 70' British Powerboat Company Co (former MASB)

That's brilliant - thank you. Obviously it has been brought up to date a little but the elements are there. I think MASB 27 is a 60ft - on larger boats would all controls be duplicated on the bridge?

Re: Details of Dover Command / HMS Wasp

Okay, so Wasp looked after Coastal Forces and Lynx all other RN matters - that makes sense. Thank you.

Re: Details of Dover Command / HMS Wasp

Just as an adjunct to this, I'm coming across several references to HMS Lynx , another shore base in Dover. Less seems to be available on this, the best description I have found so far being it was a shore base set in the cliffs at Dover. Opposite from the Lord Warden Hotel (HMS Wasp ) there are a r...

Re: 70' British Powerboat Company Co (former MASB)

Thanks, Admin. I guess Southampton is the place as BPB Hythe was close by. (But is an example of the conflicting information you get when researching, as several books quote Hythe Kent as being their base!)
Thanks again for the pictures.

That's very helpful, thank you (and the pictures are brilliant - didn't realise the DD hull planking was so visible).

70' British Powerboat Company Co (former MASB)

Can anyone give details of bridge/wheelhouse arrangements on these early boats (or direct me to a reliable source of reference)?

Grateful for any information.

Details of Dover Command / HMS Wasp

Greetings I am a full-time writer of historical nautical fiction with fourteen books currently in print. These mainly centre on an earlier period but I am now considering a series set around Coastal Forces' activity during the Second World War. Let me assure you that I will not be seeking to dramati...
