Re: Dad's Navy Service ML 170 ML 575 Malta

My late father helped build ML 170 at Aldous's yard, Brightlingsea. Do you by any remote chance have any photo, document etc which shows her--with or without crew--soon after she was built? She would have stayed for a few weeks at B'sea equipping and working up prior to joining an operational flotil...

Re: ML 206

Impressive set of additional ML 206 photos. Indeed it would be good to know dates and places of each. However all the bases of all MLs (at successive dates) can easily be looked up at the National Archives in the 1940-45 Admiralty Red Lists (bases of minor warships)--ADM 208/1, 208/2 etc. Each craft...

Re: Command structure within Nore Command

Many thanks on both counts. My book, by the way, has Appendix on P.377 showing all the Nore Cmd Coastal Force bases (and names). When Harwich (or Felixstowe), Yarmouth, Lowestoft (and later Humber and Sheerness) were given CF flotillas they were given new shore bases and these took new names. So: Fe...

Re: Command structure within Nore Command

Message for Admin. I'm the Foynes whom you kindly mention. (The book is in print again, though in need of an update.) Coastal Forces had operational flotillas within the Nore Cmd at Felixstowe, Yarmouth, Lowestoft and for some of the time Sheerness and Grimsby. Kekewich was based at Portland, then N...

Re: MTB 763 & 770 ... action 23 Feb, 1945

If still interested, I have some notes and photos of the "Combattante" sinking given me by one of her survivors, Rear-Admiral (then Lt) Jacques Zang, of the French Navy. I did also correspond with Mr Maquis, though he his letters wouldn't add to your contributions so far. The destroyer's c...

Brightlingsea

I wrote a number of naval history books several years ago which relate to Coastal Forces on the East Coast. I am planning to revise these, and am also helping a local museum build up their collection of wartime naval photos etc. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone whose father, brother etc jo...

Re: Ordinary Telegraphist Alfred Reginald GILL (MGB 318)

Very interesting account of this unusual MGB. My father helped build her at Aldous Successors, Brightlingsea, in 1941. Do you, by any chance, have any photo, letter or other memento which relates to her earliest days (i.e, between launching at B'sea and leaving that harbour after fitting out, doing ...

Re: MGB 606 and MTB 684

A very informative and interesting account of those MGBs' "careers". I've been researching and writing about Coastal Forces matters for many years, the interest having been sparked by my late father helping build several of their craft at East Coast shipyards (1940-44). Since I'm planning ...

Re: Motor Launches 120 & 149

Brightlingsea Museum and I have 2 other photos of ML 120, just after her completion in 1940. My father helped build her at Aldous Successors Shipyard.
I'd be very keen to hear from anyone who had a relation serving on her in her early days.

Re: ML 206

Dear ML 206 son... I have been researching MLs for very many years, partly for various naval histories I've published, but also out of sheer personal interest. My late father worked for Aldous Successors, Brightlingsea, where 206 was built, and worked on her. I am now helping the local museum build ...
