Re: 1st ML Flotilla

In trying to sort out who is in the original photograph. I came across a web page, posted just three months ago (Nov/Dec 2015), showing the medals awarded to TLt. J.R. Armstrong DSC, RNVR. The commanding officer of ML 450 from 23rd Mar ’43 to at least July 1945 (see link: http://www.collectorsweekly...

Re: 1st ML Flotilla

I came across a thumbnail image of TLt. J. O. Thomas RNVR, the commander of the 1st ML Flotilla, and ML 222, from September 1944 (see below). TLt. James Owen Thomas RNVR.JPG Although the image is small, it enables his identification in the main photograph of the Officer’s of the 1st ML Flotilla (see...

1st ML Flotilla

I thought forum members would be interested in a photograph that I discovered amongst my father’s papers and may be able to identify those within it. It is of the officers of the 1st ML Flotilla (see below). Officers of the 1st ML Flotilla.jpg My father served aboard ML 207 during WW2 and I have a p...

Re: ML 207

Firstly, my thanks for the information regarding ML 207 provided by Brian Holmes. Some of it precedes my father's time with the vessel but I found it fascinating anyway! With regard to Hugh McCusker, I must admit that I would be surprised if he wasn’t on ML 207 during operation Neptune and also duri...

Re: ML 207

It certainly looks as if Colin Hubbard is ‘Scouse’ - the man my father replaced was also a Stoker. The fact that he came from Southport rather than Liverpool wouldn’t matter. Anyone from the area and with the slightest hint of a Liverpool accent would immediately get the nickname Scouce and, of cour...

Re: ML 207

Hi Gray207 I've just realised where I probably heard about the minesweeping in the Seine that I referred to in your thread on ML 207, and that is in part four of the sound recording made by the IWM of William Arthur Gostling as I recognise my own note for ML 206 referenced earlier in this thread, w...

Re: ML 207

To my amazement, I came across the same Combier Mâcon, postcard (only this time uncoloured) on a French auction site and have put a bid in for it – hopefully I get it. A screen shot of the card is attached. So, we now have 100% confirmation that the location is indeed Courseulles-sur-Mer. Courseulle...

Re: ML 206

My father was on ML206 for most of the war. He was Ernest George Bell. I have many photos taken during the war and have details of where the boat was from 1941 to 1946. Hi R. Bell Your information relating to the location of ML 206 would be of great help to me as part of the research I am undertaki...

Re: ML 207

I think you are correct with Courseulles-sur-Mer as the location. I had looked at this town but couldn’t find a spot within it that seemed to fit. I also convinced myself that there was a church spire in the picture on the front of the postcard - especially when I saw the combination of Hotel Norman...

Re: ML 207

Hi Admin Thank you for your swift reply. I keep coming across things that, whilst not as good as the ships’ log, are helping to confirm were ML 207 was a different times. Here is one example that I though forum members would find interesting. Following the Normandy Landings, the ML mines weepers wor...

ML 207

My father, John Handley, served on ML 207 during WW2 and over the years he recounted many stories of his time aboard. So much so, I feel I actually know the crew members myself! Back in the 80’s he put pen to paper and wrote down an account of his experiences. His first attempt resulted in a relativ...
