Andrew Banger DSM, MID.
Born 31st May 1922 Died 29th January 2010

Andrew Banger was born in Stirling Scotland, he had three brothers and one sister. His Mother worked in catering and his Father was a Chauffer.
Andrew moved to England with his family at 6 years old and started his education. On leaving school he became an apprentice plumber, on completing his apprenticeship

Andrew volunteered to join the Royal Navy.
He was based at Felixstowe and served on MTB’s (MTB454).
During his service Andrew was awarded The Distinguished Service Medal and was also Mentioned in Dispatches.

Andrew was demobbed in 1946, he then moved with his wife Joyce to Slough in Berkshire. He worked as an engineer at various establishments. During his career Andrew worked at Pinewood Studios building the sets for various films including James Bond and Super Man.

After retirement Andrew maintained an active life, he loved holidaying in Scotland. His main activity was to build a replica model of his boat MTB 454; this was built from drawings and historical photos. He installed engines and made it radio controlled, the model spent many hours on the water.

Andrew was a very proud member of The Coastal Forces Veterans Association, he enjoyed attending meeting and AGM’s. He loved his time with the association and his shipmates. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.

11/5/44 MTB 450 (SO), MTB 453 and MTB 454 are directed to intercept vessels moving west from Cherbourg.
MTB 450, MTB 453 and MTB 454 stop and detect vessels moving east by hydrophone.
MTB 450, MTB 453 and MTB 454 take up position closer to the entrance to Cherbourg and, after two hours sight two trawlers, a large merchant ship and a fourth vessel.
MTB 450 and MTB 453 attempt a torpedo attack and close to 1200 yards before meeting heavy fire. MTB 450 and MTB 453 fire four torpedoes from 700 yards. The largest target is hit. There are two explosions and the ship rolls over to starboard. MTB 450 attacks the trawlers.
MTB 453 and MTB 454 are despatched to attack the fourth vessel. The second trawler is set on fire and the fourth vessel severely damaged. MTB 450, MTB 453 and MTB 454 are all damaged. In MTB 450 the Senior Officer is wounded in the stomach and leg. One man is killed and five wounded. In MTB 453, the Commanding Officer is wounded. 7-8/4/45 The Fourth S Boat Flotilla (KKpt. Fimmen) (205, S 204, S 219, S 202, S 703 and S 304) and Sixth S Boat Flotilla (Kptlt. Matzen) (S 222, S 705, S 211, S 223, S 704, S 212 and S 706) lay mines on the route between the Thames and the Schelde.
HMS Rutherford vectors MTB 454 and MTB 482 to intercept five E Boats in the North Sea. The fourth and fifth boats are lagging and MTB 454 and MTB 482 attempt to cut them off. The fourth E Boat blows up and sinks. MTB 454 and MTB 482 then concentrate on the fifth boat which is stopped. MTB 454 closes to finish off the fifth boat whilst MTB 482 pursues the other three boats. HMS Rutherford orders MTB 482 to break off the chase as the range slowly increases. MTB 454 and MTB 482 search the area, pick up 3 officers and 37 ratings from the E Boats and transfer them to HMS Rutherford.
In action with the British MTBs, S 202 and S 703 are lost in collision. S 223 sinks after striking a mine off Ostende
