Lieutenant Patrick Macnee

Postby Admin » Thu Jun 25, 2015 11:52 pm

The actor Patrick Macnee has died at his home in California age 93. The star of film and television, his most memorable role was that of John Steed in the iconic television series The Avengers, which ran from 1961–1969 on British television. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy as a seaman, serving initially on HMS Whippingham as an anti-aircraft gunner. Educated at Eton, he applied for a commission and was accepted to King Alfred, before being assigned to MTBs and further training at St Christopher. As a Sub-Lieutenant he served as Navigation Officer on MTB 415, a British Power Boat craft forming part of the 1st MTB Flotilla based at Dartmouth. In the run up to D-Day, he was promoted to First Lieutenant on MTB 434, which was sunk by gunfire from a German surface craft off Normandy on 9 July 1944, though he was not onboard at the time, having been hospitalised earlier with bronchitis.
