Photo of MTB 316

Postby henzy » Thu Jan 10, 2019 9:25 am

Hi people. Not sure if I have asked this site before but for years have been trying to find a photo of 316. My Father Henry Leslie Clark was Petty Officer Coxn on her when she was blown up 17th July 1943. Would appreciate any tips.
Cheers
Brian

pt-26-possibly-mtb-316.jpg
This photo from the Elco Naval Division Archive on Gene Kirkland's PT King web site shows PT 26 at the back, far right of picture. Gene King describes the photo thus:

This photograph shows 77 and 70-foot boats on the same assembly line. PT 23 is in the left foreground, while PT 19 is to the immediate right. In the background, far left, can be seen PT 22, while PT 26 is at the far right; other 70-foot boats can be seen in the background as well. It appears the 70-footers are being gutted for modification prior to their transfer to Royal Navy hands--note the exhaust pipes and other equipment on PT 19's foredeck.

Gene Kirkland

There was a PT 26 which served with the USN, and PTC 26 that was given to the Royal Navy, and which became MTB 316. If all of the boats shown in the photo above are those undergoing conversion ahead of being transferred to the RN, then this would most likely be MTB 316.

Hi. Thankyou for the prompt reply. Yes the info I have been able to obtain was that 316 was originally PT 58 and that PT 59 was firstly Commanded by John F Kennedy. The closest I can come is pic of 315 ( if attachment comes out ). Appreciate your time.
Cheers

Hi Brian. First day as new member.
I do have photographs taken on board MTB 316 at sea on a business run in Med., plus some pictures of crew ashore celebrating a victory by Joe Stalin at the time my father was crew. But she was sunk soon afterwards and as he was not on board there must have been a crew change. . Some details of ship visible.

Have just asked how I can post these on this site and awaiting reply.

I found your request whilst searching for similar. My Uncle Charles Cumper AB seaman was also on MTB 316 on that fateful night. I have a few photos of 10th Flotilla 260, 313 and 315. My uncle also took some photos of seamen which I believe are from 316.

The photo of my uncle with the dog is at the Torpedo Depot, together with all the photos of the other MTB boats are also taken in Marsamxett Harbour Malta.

Hope these pictures have been of some help

Rod

Hello Rod

Thank you very much for the photos which will make a useful addition to the archives. Do you by chance have any names to go with the crew member photos?

Rod

I am just wondering at the crew shots a little as the men appear to be sporting cap tallies in the name of a ship which is not quite clear, though it appears a short one, and the machinery/infrastructure behind the men looks quite large for an MTB, so I suspect these may be from a larger vessel in harbour at the time.
