does anyone here know the reason for MTB 345, 344 and 346 to have been sent from Lerwick to Norway? My grandfather was on the 345 and I would be interested to know. Thanks

MTB 345 was on a routine naval patrol aimed at attacking enemy coastal shipping, as testified to by one of the Norwegian naval officers at the subsequent war crimes trial.

As a point of interest, during the war there were a number of Coastal Forces flotillas made up of French, Dutch and Norwegian, crews, with the boats being lent to their respective navies by the Royal Navy. It was common practice however for the Royal Navy to maintain a presence on each of the boats via one member of Royal Naval personnel, usually a telegraphist, in order to ensure clear lines of communication at sea between other boats and their bases.
