HDML 1392 12" model

I was honoured to have been asked to make a model of HDML 1392 as a 90th birthday gift for her First Lieutenant whilst at D-Day with the 149th ML Flotilla, TSLt J M B Lloyd RNVR by members of his family. I used one of the 12" (i.e. 1/72nd scale) GRP hulls which I produce for modellers, and set it upon a nice teak base with 2 brass plinths to support it. I had hoped to use a timber from the original vessel which is presently in service with Blue Star Cruises as Sarinda, but I did not have the time to procure this. Working from a sized general arrangement drawing I fitted a cambered deck and built the superstructure from plastic sheets and strips, added all the detailing and finished her in the appropriate colourscheme as per a photo of her which I was lucky to be furnished with. I also made a display case to protect the model from dust etc. I was very pleased to hear it was well received.

John Lloyd (for whom this lovely model was made) was my father's No. 1 during WW2. John was a charming man and kept in touch with dad (Dennis Frederick Merritt - known on board as Freddy) and introduced him to the CFVA. He also spoke a tribute at dad's funeral. Not to be forgotten.

The model of HDML 1392 is now in the Coastal Forces Museum at Gosport. It's labelled as item 13 in a cabinet that holds info and memorabilia about Operation Neptune. (I could send you a photo of the cabinet but cannot see a way of doing this here...)
