Vosper 363-378 Annapolis Yacht Yard

Hi, I'm new on this board and I'm looking for photos of the lend-lease Vospers I can use for my build. Unfortunately, photos of Jacob's and Annapolis lend-lease Vospers appear to be pretty rare. I like to combine my love for history and modelling. Here's my build, not much progress so far but that is because I'm quite obsessive about getting the details right:

Kind regards,

Thanks for the pic, it's clearer than the one I've got. I think I would like to build MTB 378 in its later guise, that is with the twin Vickers guns replaced by the twin Oerlikon:

I don't know if MTB 375 and 376 were also upgraded in a similar way. I think I have most of the better-known pics but I'm very curious about the following IWM images: A 27452 - A 27455. The descriptions of these photos are intriguing but unfortunately they are not available online (ordering prints is quite expensive and I have no idea if Annapolis craft are depicted in these pics anyway). By the way, I really enjoyed the IWM interview with the commander of MTB 378 (Lieutenant G.P.H. James). He was very positive about the quality of the American built Annapolis Vospers and he made a remark about the great service (Annapolis apparently sent them jars of paint for their boat wherever they went).

Regards,

Arjan

I note that the text description for the IWM photo A 27452 describes a Sub Lieut J P H James as being on the bridge. There is an award of the DSC to Temporary Sub-Lieutenant George Philip Henry JAMES RNVR, which according to Seedies List of Coastal Forces Awards, was for the sinking of fifteen enemy ships ln the Gulf of Genoa in 1944 and 1945, which presumably must be the same man, and which gives his boat as MTB 378. The IWM have been steadily digitising more of their photographs, so if you keep checking back you may eventually find these online. A 27452–A 27455 along with others already published on the site are by the same photographer, Lt F A Hudson, so I'm not sure why if they digitise items in batches, these photos of his are not already available.

Thanks for your response, the reason why these particular photos haven't been digitised may have to do with copyright issues ?

Hello Arjan

No I imagine it's just the sheer volume of images the IWM holds and the manpower needed to do it all. The photographs were all taken by a Royal Navy photographer which makes them Crown Copyright, which has now expired, but all the negatives have been passed to the IWM so they can release them all in time. Unfortunately, unless there happens to be a copy of the print (photograph) elsewhere, the IWM is able to charge for making a copy even though the original has passed out of copyright, as they are the only ones with the negatives.

To my delight I noticed today that the IWM photos I was looking for have been digitised in the mean time. I get the impression that many other interesting MTB pics have also been digitised recently. I suggest using search words "MTB" and "Leghorn".

Arjan

Hello Arjan

Yes the IWM have been steadily digitising more of their collection. For those interested in the subject it's worth searching on 'MTB' or 'MGB', but also 'Motor Torpedo Boat', 'Motor Gun Boat', 'Motor Launch', 'Coastal Forces', 'Felixstowe' etc as although each of the search terms can bring up duplicates, one search term can sometimes find images that another doesn't.

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections

You can also set filters on the result under Media, to get images, or sound recordings only, set the period to the Second World War, and also at right of screen set the number of items to '50' to display more results on the page.

Best wishes

Hi Arian

My grandfather served on MTB374 so I would love to see pictures of your model and see if I could do something similar?

Thanks

Whilst it is not marked on the boat I have been led to believe this is MTB374

Hi, thanks a lot for the interesting photo. I think the photo may be mirrored because the SOE radar mast is on the starboard side whereas these were always on the port side. This particular boat looks more similar to the Jacob's Vospers than to the Annapolis ones in that it seems to have twin Vickers guns and flare launchers. The gunshield on the bow Oerlikon is unusual for American built Vospers.

Kind regards,

Arjan

Hi Vosper seekers
It is with interest I view the current topic re Vospers . Having served on MTB 243 of 24th Flott. in the Mediterraniun but sadly missed the draft to the 28th Flottilla that
replaced them . I attaché for interest paintings by our CFA Artist Harold Garland to add to the topic of Vospers

Hi Peter

I believe my grandfather also served on 243 with the 24th.
