Coastal Forces Bases

Postby Ted Else » Thu Sep 10, 2009 4:10 pm

There is a new page on this site giving the position of known CF bases in the UK. There are plans to extend this feature to encompass the Mediterranean War Theatre. Do you know any of the 'not so well known', especially any details of the several Base Ships so employed?

Hello John
Yes - there certainly is quite a lot of good information in that link - somebody's major research (for a book)?
It does not contradict what is on our map page re- HMS Sea Hawk and its close relationship with HMS Nimrod, but amazingly the link does not mention Sea Hawk.
Very good though, and thanks for the post.

If so please contact us.

Thank You 'Julie',
We shall be updating the maps pages very soon. Information regarding the Mobile Base Units, in the Mediterranean Theatre in particular, is proving to be quite a challenge. We are confident with our research team and shall 'update' the pages as soon as possible. Thanks again Julie.

Hello Len
Thanks for that information.
Do you know where those temp base staff originated from? (HMS Hannibal or HMS Hasdrubal, or else where?)
Likewise we know that the cruiser HMS Colombo placed a temp base, during the latter stages of the war in the Adriatic, at Zada, Croatia. We are hoping to trace where they originated from, as they were understood not to be manned from the crew of Colombo.
Any more places that you may remember - please drop a line and thanks again. :tu:

Looking at my Dad's records, he was at a forward base in Santa Margherita on the Italian Riviera during 1945. I have travel dockets for him to go by lorry for spares to Naples via rome from that period.

I have since discovered this is HMS Orwell (G98) so must be in home waters after WWII.

HMS Orwell's war was confined to Home Waters according to Naval-History Net. A very active war at that!! but not a CF base ship.
