MTB Torpedo Tube structural details...........

Postby Chris Preston » Fri Aug 23, 2024 9:19 pm

Good Day All,

I'm building a 24th scale BPB Co MTB - MTB 466 of the 29th RCN MTB Flotilla, and am now starting to work on the torpedo tubes. The model is based on the Deans Marine kit, but is heavily modified (mostly scratch-built) to make it more accurate. As with most of the kit details, the torpedo tubes have been simplified, and the kit is too large not to incorporate as much detail as possible.

Would anyone here have details on the torpedo tube base - the open box girder structure below the actual tube? All the references and photos that I have do not provide details on this base below the tubes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Chris Preston

Hello Chris

This is the closest I can get you with some photos of MTB 491 which are contained within ADM 199/2445 Notes on Coastal Forces (HMS Excellent) at the National Archive in Kew

Many Thanks Admin,

I haven't seen these three photos, so they're very useful.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Chris

'Evening Admin,

Those photos of the torpedo tube details are extremely helpful. Any chance you have photos of the bridge/cockpit details - controls, and dials/gages, etc?

Cheers,

Chris

Unfortunately not Chris. These are the only three photos of a British Power Boat within this particular set, which fortuitously happens to be one of the Canadian boats. The others in the file are for Fairmile Ds MTB 632 & MTB 650, then MTB 733 showing arrangement of depth charge racks after the removal of her torpedo tubes, Camper & Nicholson boat MTB 511, and then finally ex MTB 5014 being converted for a RAF Long Range Rescue Craft (LRRC), but the emphasis throughout is on the weaponry, and in particular the arrangements for storage lockers for shells, and rocket flares.

I have also looked through my other photos and haven't found any for the bridge of a British Power Boat. The Manitoba collection has a nice one of a Coxwain Edward Howard standing on the bridge of Canadian 'Dogboat' MTB 726, but otherwise that's it I'm afraid for photos of the type that I am currently aware of.

Many Thanks Admin,

And - apologies the the late reply. I'm aware of the photos you've mentioned in your last post, and have the one of the Cox'n for the Fairmile MTB, The three photos you sent of MTB 491 are excellent, and ones that I hadn't seen before, so they'll be most helpful, and again.......greatly appreciate.

Cheers,

Chris
