Hi
I am looking for information about the boats my Grandfather served on
Eric Levin Leading Stoker 94581
ML 149/ML(A)3 (Nov 1944-July 1946)
and ML 919 (July 1946-Sep 1947)

Any information would be gratefully received as i am writing a book about my Grandfathers service history. I have done 22 years in the RAF Regiment and am now in the Army (M.P.G.S.) and wish to honor my Grandfather's service for family history.
Looking forward to hearing from anybody
best regards
Steve

Thanks for the replies
very use full information its a pity there are no records for each motor launch containing all the missions, operations, routine tasks, action and so forth as it is hard to find any particulars.

Hi All,

Recently researching my maternal Grandad's - Bertram (known to everyone as Bert) George Ray war records.
He served on ML149 from October 1943 to February 1946. He was the Telegraphist.

I have identified him from the group photo, as standing on the lower row, far right just behind Steve's Grandfather next to the funnel.

He joined the Royal Navy in 1941, and also served on ML 152 and ML 455, prior to joining ML 149, which he served on the longest on until being demobbed.

I have enclosed the few wartime photos my mum has of him, we are fortunate to have an original of his service record and medals. I have taken a snap shot of the service record timeline.

Also, I cannot identify some of the locations/ships noted on his service record such as Collingwood, Drake, HMS Skirmisher, Attack - are these Royal Navy bases where he was training prior to active service?

Hopefully this fills a gap as who all the crew were on ML 149, interested to hear from anyone who can provide further information on any of the ML's he served on.

Regards

Phil.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the photos of your grandfather. To answer your question about his service record, all the ships shown are shore bases, as was the case for all Coastal Forces personnel.

Collingwood is the basic training camp at Fareham
Drake was the main barracks Plymouth
St Christopher was the principal Coastal Force training base at Fort William
Skirmisher was a frontline base at Milford Haven
Attack was both a frontline and a training base at Portland
Mentor II was a frontline base at Stornoway
Hornet was the principal Coastal Forces base at Gosport
Mantis was a frontline base at Lowestoft
Nightjar is not a usual base for Coastal Forces and is shown as a Royal Naval Air Station at Inskip, Lancashire, which is inland, so whether this was in respect of some inter service training course I couldn't say.

I hope this helps
