ML 466

I see in the Book of Remembrance today, there is a long list of men killed on ML 466. What happened?

Hi my name is Nick Mead. I am trying to find information regarding my great uncle, William Charles Mead who served on ML466 in Ww2. I know he was killed in action but I have no details or photos. His family never got over it and never spoke of it. Regards Nick Mead.

There is a previous topic about ML 466 if you go down the list.

I suggest this is combined

There is also a story that there was a survivor which I am investigating.

Hello Jeffrey

There is an image of ML 466 from the collection of Lieutenant Commander J K Neale DSC RNVR showing ML 466 in the Shetland Islands in June 1943 which forms part of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) Collection, although this particular photo has still to be digitised. A digitised photo from the same collection shows ML 252, 467, 445 & 452 at Thorshavn in the Faroe Islands, 3 August 1942.

These were all elements of the 21st ML Flotilla and there is also a photo of Sub-Lieutenants Cragg, Holloway, Fowler, Day and Wilkie.

You can contact the IWM's Media Sales and Licensing for further details of any available photo.

Note: I have amalgamated posts from a second thread on the subject of ML 466 into this earlier one, and added two further posts on the subject of ML 466 from a thread on ML 446 where they were originally posted, so as to keep everything on the subject in one place.

Yes you would need to contact the IWM about the possibility of getting this image digitised.

I dont’t know a great deal about this boat other than the basics of its construction as outlined in the boat database, and can only imagine the boat struck a mine left over from sweeping operations in the Scheldt the previous Autumn as part of an operation to free up the port of Amsterdam.

There is a series of notes belonging to Lt Cdr J K Neale deposited with the IWM and their summary provides an brief insight into the work of the 21st ML Flotilla.
...command of ML 252 (21st Motor Launch Flotilla) which was based on Scapa Flow for local patrol duties (July 1942 - February 1944), including a period of detached duty on anti-submarine patrols from the Faroes; his command of the 21st ML Flotilla (February - November 1944) embracing their passage from Scapa Flow to Dover (May), their employment on smoke laying operations to protect convoys passing through the Dover Straits following the D-Day landings (June - August), on routine North Sea patrols from Felixstowe (October - November) and on smoke laying and other duties during the assault on Walcheren (November);
