Petty Officer Sydney Scott - MGB 657

Postby John Duncan » Thu Aug 23, 2018 11:12 pm

Good evening, my first post, I had the good the good fortune to speak to former Petty Officer Syd Scott (98) who lives near me.

He was a PO based at Malta / Ancona from 1944 to 1946 and insisted he 'didn't get up to much' 'just a bit of minesweeping and stuff like that'. I suspect that Syd is perhaps playing down his time in the Med to a degree as he showed me a picture of MGB 657 he has in his collection, which was sunk by a mine and a number of men killed.

Going back to speak to Syd again next week some time, it would be great if anyone could give me more information on Syd or any of his shipmates that I could ask him about.

Hello John

Thank you for your post. The information we have on MGB 657 is that it was:
Fairmile 115' D-Type Motor Gun Boat
Builder's Yard: Woodnutt, Bembridge, Isle of Wight
Completion: 9th February 1943 Loss or Disposal: 12th September 1944
Notes: MGB 657 was deemed a Constructive Total Loss (CTL) through being mined in the Mediterranean on 11/12 September 1944, and broken up in December 1944.

We would love to contact Syd Scott - if he would like to be contacted, let me know his address etc.

Regards

David Carter (Secretary)

Hi John,
Thank for getting touch with us . I was in that area about the same time as Sydney and possibly tied up along side his MGB 657,many times and in many places, I served aboard MGB 647.
There is a considerable amount of information about MGB 657 contained in Rover Reynolds book "Dog Boats at War" which includes the sad photo of MGB 657 sadly beyond repair, and we hold in Remembrance those shipmates who lost their lives.
Finally I am hoping to catch with Sydney I am Now 94
Cheers Peter A/B Radar
