Petty Officer J. George Huntley, D.S.M. P/JX.144954

Postby AJGY » Sat Sep 10, 2011 11:52 am

Hello CFV,

I am researching my Grandfather's service history - Petty Officer J. George Huntley, D.S.M. P/JX.144954. He emigrated to Australia after WWII and passed away in the late 1990's. All I have is his DSM and a note of the award from the Admiralty stating it was won for action seen on MTB 632 of the coast of Normandy in the initial landings in June 1944. I found a note in the London Gazette that he was Mentioned in Dispatches in November 1944, but with no further detail. He spoke very little of his service especially not to us as children. So I would like to build up a picture so I can tell my own boys his story and somehow keep his memory alive.

What little I know is he served on ML's in the Mediterranean, was sunk and incarcerated with the crew of HMS Manchester. After several escape attempts was eventually liberated by the 8th Army. He returned to the UK and then served with Coastal Forces, the only other boat we think he served on was MTB 77.

I am trying to get information from the MOD but they need a death certificate which I am trying source from Australia.

I would welcome any advice or information that anyone might have.

Thanks

Alastair

Welcome Aboard AJGY
You may be aware of Ken Forresters' story If only I had known, also reached from our Home page.

You will see that he was aboard MTB 632 at the time of the Normandy landings and would have known your grandfather. I am in constant touch with Ken - I will mention your request at the earliest opportunity and will get back to you via a PM (if appropriate)
Best of luck with your quest

Thanks for this. Just after I posted my initial message I spent some more time looking through the site and read Ken's incredible story and found this line:

"I turned round and could see the heads and shoulders of the Captain and the Coxswain, P.O. Huntley, above the bridge with tracer shells whining past them as others exploded near them"

I think this is my Grandfather, so he and Ken did serve on the same boat at the same time? It would wonderful to hear back if Ken remembers anything about him. PM would be fine.

Thank you

Brian, This is great - thank you.

I would also like to publicly thank both Ken Forrester & Pioneer, who put me in touch with Ken. I had a wonderful conversation with Ken who served with my Grandfather. This has been an incredible and unexpected start to my research - thank you both.
