My Grandad (Thomas Glover) served in the coastal forces in WW2 on the following boats, MTB261 (1 Oct 42 -18 Oct 42), MTB60 (19 Oct 42 - 31 Dec 42), MTB57 (1 Jan 43 - 30 June 43), ML361 (1 July 43 - 6 Feb 44), ML911 (7 Feb- 31 July). If anyone has any information relating to him or these boats I would be very interested. I believe ML 361 was assigned to the SoE, if anyone has any information relating to this I would be very interested. Many thanks, James

Hi
ML361 survived to become Greek owned in 1945 and named Karpathos.

Hello Jimmy and welcome to the forum.

I have managed to compile the following information, which is all I have at this time.

MTB 60
7th MTB Flotilla
71' Vosper MTB
MTBs 57, 58, 59, 60, 62, 64, 65

MTB 57
Casualty: Able Seaman James Arthur George P/SSX 28995 15/7/1943
Award: Able Seaman Norman William TURNER P/JX 252864 Distinguished Service Medal For bravery and skill in actions in the Mediterranean while serving in light coastal craft: London Gazette: 21st December 1943

Loftus’ Adopted Motor Torpedo Boat

MTB 261
Elco 70' MTB
MTB 261 was one of ten Motor Torpedo Boats built in the United States in 1940 by Elco, to an original design by British Power Boat Company, and lend-leased to the Royal Navy on 11 April 1941. MTB 261 was shipped directly to the Mediterranean where it formed part of the 10th MTB Flotilla, and foundered at Alexandria on 28 August 1945

10th MTB Flotilla
MTBs 260, 261, 262, 264, 267, 268, 311, 316

MTB 260 at Malta
MTB 261 would have been identical to the two boats nearest the camera MTBs 313 & 260, both elements of the 10th MTB Flotilla

ML 361
Red List December 1944 shows ML 361 as at Taranto for Special Service in the Adriatic

ADMIRALTY WAR DIARIES of WORLD WAR II LEVANT COMMAND - September to November 1943 on the Naval History web site has the following details:

1943
September 23rd
M.L. 361 sailed from Bardia to land six agents with W/T equipment in the Akropolithis Area of Crete in position 34-57.5N, 15-14.5E

September 24th
Special Operation LINGEN
M.L. 361 arrived at Mersa Matruh at 2130 having successfully completed operation LINGEN. Only 14 out of 34 evacuees could be embarked owing to weather conditions.

October 31st
Special Operation CULTIVATE
M.L. 361 sailed from Bardia to land agents and stores on the south coast of Crete in position 34-55-44N, 24-56-43E.

November 1st
Special Operation CULTIVATE
M.L. 361 returned to Mersa Matruh after the successful completed of operation CULTIVATE.

It seems ML 361 was relief for MLs 837 & 842 which are shown in the December 1944 Red List as being for Special Service at Alexandria. ML 842 had been involved in special service work earlier in the Aegean, ferrying Patrick Leigh Fermor around, who famously captured and abducted the German commander on Crete, Major General Karl Kreipe, spiriting him back to Cairo.

I have an account written by Malcolm Chisholm who served with ML 842 which details something of their work, and which would provide an insight into the kind of work ML 361 may have been engaged in, that I can send to you if you are interested.
