Signal Halyards

Postby JeffM » Tue Sep 24, 2024 5:12 am

Hi,

I just joined this site. To establish my bona fides, I am retired USN, and back in the day I was XO of a Tacoma Class Patrol Gunboat (USS Welch). I recently finished a model of the HMCS Snowberry.
If you are interested:

I am gathering info and resources to build a model of MTB 628 (sharks teeth!).

Does anyone know or have references to determine where her signal halyards were belayed. I have John Lambert’s most excellent AOTS book, but drawings of the rigging do not show this. He shows cleats on the mast (four), but the angles of the halyards are not so acute as to seem that is where they are tied off.

Any help would be most appreciated.

All the best,

Jeff

Hello Jeff

Welcome to the forum. Most of the photographs of Dog Boats tend to be quite indistinct, but from what I can see of it, it appears there must have been fastenings at the back of the bridge at both corners and then extending across it, to permit each halyard to be fastened vertically, but also to group them if required, so as they could then angle in, or angle out, and there seems to have been a variety of configurations adopted amongst boats, with additional supporting wires extending down out the back of the bridge to be fastened to the deck, or else to the gun cage of the midship Oerlikon, or to a substitute metal tripod, and/or similar set up forward of the bridge.

I can sort out the better examples I have for you later, and will perhaps email you one image in particular if that is ok.

Regards

Admin (I hope that’s not too impersonal),

Whatever you can provide would be most welcome. I am actually surprised at the paucity of clear photos of these iconic boats. I have scoured the IWM database and internet and have come up with very little. For example, I can only find two images of the bridge, one in Lambert’s AOTS book (an early boat and very rudimentary) and one on this site (the one of an RCN CPO) In contrast, when I was researching images for my Flower build, I was spoiled for choices.

Sending whatever you have via email would be just fine. I don’t see a PM option, so I assume as Admin, you have access to my email address. I do look forward to seeing whatever you can provide.

In advance, thanks!

Best,

Jeff
