Question on the loss of M.T.B. 218

Postby jabdc5 » Mon Sep 15, 2025 1:59 pm

6 of the crew of M.T.B.218 were lost when it was sunk in August of 1942. 1 body was recovered and 5 men were missing presumed killed. Of the 5 missing crew members, 3 have their names recorded on the Chatham Naval Memorial and 2 have theirs on the Portsmouth Naval memorial. Can anyone tell me why they are split? I would have thought their names would have all been on the same memorial.

Hello jabdc5

Where a casualty is lost at sea, their name is recorded on the memorial of the home port they were assigned to on joining the service. The port is recorded using the first letter of a sailor's service number, 'C' for Chatham, 'D' for Devonport at Plymouth, and 'P' for Portsmouth.
