MGB 647 - Dicky Bird

Postby bevbird » Mon May 10, 2010 4:17 pm

Was wondering if anybody remembers my dad Peter 'Dicky' Bird, who was on MGB 647 in WW2? I know a few of you turned up to his funeral back in the 90's. I have just come across his jacket with a glorious Coastal Forces badge on the pocket and a pinned on Coastal Forces London Branch badge with MGB 647 Dicky Bird written on it.

Any info would be very gratefully recieved, I know its a long shot, thanks again.

Hello 'Bevbird' - welcome aboard.
As you may know we have Peter Bickmore BEM as one of our esteemed members, 647 was one of the boats that he served on.
I shall let him know of your post - hopefully he will be in touch.

Hello again 'bevbird'
I have had some contact with Peter Bickmore BEM - I quote from an e-mail that I received...."It is with interest I learn of "Dicky Bird " he was a great stalwart of the CFVA in its early stages although I never knew him on board MGB 647 it was one of those sad situations when we passed in the night so to speak I was drafted to 647 as replacement after an action which resulted in casualties and Dicky was one of the wounded . I caught up with him 1975 within the CFVA great shipmate ...."
There is another 647 veteran that is a member of the London Branch - Jim Barnes - unfortunately he is not 'on line' but when I next meet up with him I shall let him know of your quest.
Regards

Hi, my name is Sam Woods and my grandfather served on 647 in WW2, he turns 93 in June and is suffering from Alzheimer’s. To this day the one memory he has of the boat is the name ‘Dicky Bird’

Thanks for the memories , I knew Dicky from the early days of the Coastal Forces Veterans Association , he was a pioneer of those early days , it was Dicky who sought the Holiday Company ( Phoenix Travels ) who arranged our fist visit to Yugoslavia as it was then known in 1983.
Sadly I was drafted to MGB 647 after the tragic loss and injuries to the crew after the action in June 1944,at the time Dicky was injured , and thankfully remained with the boat until we paid off in Malta in July 1945 . I have many recorded memories to share
Greetings and thanks

Dear Sam Woods

Thank you for news of your grandfather. A group of coastal forces veterans, including Peter who knew him, meet on HMS Belfast. Our next meeting is on Sunday 15th April at 11.00. You would be welcome to join us. Just let me know as I am arranging catering.

Kind regards

David Carter (Branch Secretary)
