HMS 447 FL

Postby GRAPEN25 » Thu Nov 08, 2018 8:52 pm

I am researching the service of my late father who served in the Royal Marines from 1943-46.
During this time I have learnt he was serving with COPRA from DECEMBER 1943 to FEBRUARY 1945 and was a coxswain during this period.
A small red id document I believe called a station card states on the top rh side next to H.M.S the writing 447 FL: and under that PART OF SHIP is written C.O.N.U. which I understand was combined operations naval unit.
I assume from this he was seconded to this operation.
The only reference I can find to 447 is the MTB 447 which I understand was part of the 35th FLOTILLA based on the south coast which is where I understand he was serving for a period.
Could anyone advise if my interpretation of the HMS 447 FL is correct or were there other HMS vessels perhaps with this numbering.

Hello Grapen25 and welcome to the forum.

I suspect the reference to 447 is more likely a landing craft of that number, or else a Landing Craft Flotilla. This document on the Royal Marines Museum web site contains a reference to a 447th LCP Ancillary Flotilla.
