MGB / MTB / ML sunk close to Berck Buoy

Postby jay62 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 12:07 pm

Hello

As a diver, we found the rear of a wreck with 2 helices with a square stern made of wood with a canon at the back around 40mm. we think at the beginning about a raumboot but there are bits of English washbasin and nothing written on the propeller shafts and on the propellers, unlike the German Ramboots. the stern width is 5m so we believe she is an ML cruiser as there are no signs of torpedoes yet.

Any clue about a sunk ship in the area ?

Thank a lot.

Jay

Hello Jay

Thank you for your enquiry. The figures for maximum beam I have for Fairmile 'A' and 'B' class are 17' 5" and 18' 3" respectively, and that of the larger 'D' class is 21' 3", but I don't have reliable figures for the stern width of each type.

Our boat database shows all the boat losses by year, and some are noted as lost in the English Channel, but there is no more accurate position than that. In general the only motor launches involved in sorties off the French coast tended to be minelayers, which were principally the 'A' Class (ML 100–111), one of which (ML 108) is shown as lost in the Channel in September 1943, and then there were a few boats of various types lost in the Channel after the invasion in 1944 which are known to have struck mines.
